ABOUT US

The company was established in 1888 and the original building located at 733 St. Antoine in Detroit was designated a historical landmark in 1972. The move from downtown Detroit was necessitated by the lack of parking and area to store equipment and materials. The three-story structure was designed to house the horses required at that time for transportation of material and workmen. All of the huge metal fabrication equipment was still belt driven and definitely would not have received OSHA approval!

Early records that the company has preserved indicate Detroit Cornice & Slate played an important role in building of the new city. Our crews traveled all over the United States during the depression to work on post offices, prisons, and federal buildings. The "crash" closed the banks and the checks that had been issued to the labor force were brought back to the office and cash was distributed to men. Henry Ford called and the company installed the roof on his first production plant. We purchased a Ford Touring Car, "fully equipped" directly from the Ford Motor Company on June 23, 1915 for "$490.00, plus $1.90 for Gasoline and Oil."

		Detroit Cornice & Slate Co., Inc. now maintains an 11,000 square foot sheet metal shop capable of handling all ornamental, as well as architectural, metal requirements. Our workmen are union, and our labor rates meet Davis-Bacon requirements. We are a small company which enables us to maintain a personal relationship with an owner, general contractor, or architect. The average number of years of employment for our workforce exceeds 20 years. Their experience in our trades exceeds this average which makes for an extremely competent, multi-talented and enthusiastic group. We are Certified for Awardability by the State of Michigan, and Wayne County, as a Woman Owned Small Business. We are the oldest member of the Construction Association of Michigan - formerly Builder's & Trader's, and Builder's Exchange.
